Meeting in Navalny’s case on defamation of a veteran postponed in Moscow
The Magistrates’ Court of the Yuzhnoye Medvedkovo metropolitan area postponed the hearing on the criminal case of Alexei Navalny, who is accused of slandering the veteran of the Great Patriotic War Ignat Artemenko, until February 12, reports zakon.kz with reference to RIA Novosti.
Postpone the session until February 12 at 10:00, – said the judge Vera Akimova.
The case was initiated due to Navalny’s negative comments on the video in which the war veteran spoke in support of changes to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. At the end of August, the court decided to suspend the process due to the illness of the accused.
Navalny is charged with an article on libel (part 2 of article 128.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). If found guilty on this charge, he may be fined or compulsory labor. He does not face a real term, even taking into account two conditional convictions, since the article on libel does not imply imprisonment.
According to investigators, on June 2, Navalny published “false statements containing a negative assessment of the veteran, discrediting his honor and dignity” in a commentary to a video in which Artemenko supports the amendments to the Constitution.
